Animal Welfare Standards Project

THE AWSP STORY

The Animal Welfare Standards Project was founded in 2014 by the animal welfare research team within the School of Veterinary Science at the University of Queensland. In the earliest stages of the project, the aim was to increase awareness of standards for humane slaughter and transportation of animals via land, sea and air in Asia. Research projects and workshops were conducted in China, Thailand, Viet Nam and Malaysia.

In 2017, AWSP shifted focus to capacity development in animal welfare science in China, with support from Open Philanthropy. AWSP began long term collaborations with 5 top agricultural universities in China, focusing on high impact research and training opportunities in animal welfare science for academics and industry stakeholders. Collaborators included China Agricultural University (Beijing), Inner Mongolia Agricultural University (Hohhot), Zhejiang University (Hangzhou), Henan Agricultural University (Zhengzhou), South China Agricultural University (Guangzhou) and Foshan University (Foshan). Through these collaborations AWSP improves the lives of many animals in production systems including fish, chickens, sheep, cattle, and pigs.

How the AWSP has benefited postgraduate students in China

“It was great to have the opportunity to be involved in the Animal Welfare Standard Project.  At the time, I came to study in college of animal science and technology, I was shown the great interest in animal welfare due to the project. During my post graduate study, AWSP enabled me to grasp lots of knowledge of animal welfare. I hope to try my best to improve the environment of animal welfare in China, or in my hometown at least. Maybe in the future, I will do my career in this aspect.” Tianxu Liu, postgraduate student from China Agricultural University.

“It was great to be part of the Animal Welfare Standard Project. This project has enlightened me about animal welfare science, and I have gained extensive knowledge and skills in animal behaviour and physiology, with a particular focus on farmed fish. Additionally, I have had the opportunity to collaborate with many amazing researchers in AWSP and complete my PhD studies in China and Australia.” Yifei Yang, postgraduate student from the University of Queensland.
