Heart rate variability (HRV) is a minimally-invasive proxy measure of autonomic nervous system activity. The autonomic nervous system is responsible for the fight-or-flight response. Accordingly, HRV can be used as an indicator of the physiological stress response in animals and humans. This infographic provides some basic information on HRV and how it can be measured in animals. Relevant for animal science or veterinary students, veterinarians, and animal scientists.
